The sun is a renewable source of energy that has become increasingly popular over the last 10 years. Photovoltaic systems are being installed all over the world and the components used to build them need to endure extreme temperature ranges and UV exposure. Photovoltaic systems are also growing in the UK, but there's confusion over which materials and solar cables to use, as some systems have been installed with unsuitable products, such as Rubber cables.
Rubber Solar cables will perform their functions, but after exposure to severe temperature variations they will eventually become brittle, in some cases leading to arcing which can generate temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C.
Solar cables need to be durable and resilient to withstand and survive in the harshest of conditions. The cables will need to be certified to national and international approvals by independent testing institutes, as well as being tested in their own laboratories. Quality solar cables have many benefits including UV resistant and the fact that they can withstand extreme temperature variations and weather.

Specific solar cables have an election beamed cross linked halogen free range of cables that offers weather, abrasion and UV resistant protection for permanent outdoor use. They are suited for the connection of the solar modules to the AC/DC inverter. Cores of fine wire strands of tinned copper, with electron beam cross linked copolymer insulation and coloured coded black, red or blue. The outer sheath consists of black electron beam cross-linked copolymer.
Other cables such as certain halogen free cables have smaller outer diameters for installations in confined spaces. These types of cables are weather, abrasion and UV resistant offering protection for permanent outdoor use. They are suitable for connecting the solar modules and as a connection to the AC/DC inverter.
Robust solar cables have a high grade steel wire braid to protect against mechanical damage and against rodents and termites.
NYY copper conductors and NAYY aluminum conductors are VDE approved, black PVC jacketed, power and control cables which are available in single or multi-core versions. These cables are specifically designed for energy supply in cable ducts, power stations, distribution boards, industrial applications and subscriber networks. The larger conductor cross sections are used to transmit high power loads between individual panels and connect to the DC/AC inverter of large photovoltaic plants. NYY and NAYY cables can be installed in open air, underground and in water.
